Rock Lodge teeters above the landscape. It is perched high on the summit of a koppie (a small hill rising up from the African veld) providing gloriously panoramic views across the bush and the Drakensberg Mountain range, the wildlife roaming within and the beauty of the veld (African grassland) below. Everything you need has been thought of and included in your all-inclusive holiday - including those things you had no idea you wanted! This is not just a luxury child friendly safari lodge; this is a unique experience, one that will invoke family memories for a lifetime.

For Kids

  • Cubs Club spa treatments including Fairy Stone Massage, Choco Boo and Little Bee Facial.
  • Invite to Ulusuba’s Cub Club (complimentary for 0-11 year olds). If you are older than 11, you are considered an adult.
  • Personal welcome letter in your room on arrival with a list of phone numbers of other Cubs staying at Ulusuba.
  • A backpack on arrival filled with safari-themed gifts and a cap.
  • Welcome treasure hunt.
  • Arts and Crafts activities including musical instrument making, coloured sand art and an afternoon of rock painting.
  • Children’s DVDs, CDs and a Nintendo Wii available to keep your Cubs busy.
  • Cubs will be invited to the swimming pool with an experienced swimmer; he/she will supervise afternoon pool activities and the kids can enjoy ice-cream to re-energise.
  • A wide variety of educational board games, puzzles and ‘Big 5’ playing cards, all with a safari theme.
  • Traditional South African kids’ games.
  • A mini Ranger’s course where your Cub’s Ranger will teach them about the African bush and how to track and identify animal footprints and dung droppings.
  • Safari walks around Rock Lodge to spot birds, insects, lizards and anything else your Cub may find.
  • Bedtime story-telling complete with milk and cookies, or whatever normally helps get your cubs ready for bed!
  • A morning of creating and cooking homemade pizzas for lunch and cupcakes for guests to enjoy at tea.
  • Visit to the local community, so kids can learn about giving back and can see how different the lifestyles are in the community.
  • Children over 6 are welcome on the Game Drives.

For Adults

  • Stunning views over the Bush, perched on one of the highest koppies in Southern Africa.
  • Beautiful décor incorporating modern and traditional African art.
  • This is all inclusive at a different level. Arrive and be welcomed by a glass of champagne on the airfield. All food and all beverages are included. There is no extra wine list or premium brand drink list. If you fancy a bottle of champagne, just ask for one. You probably won’t even need to ask as the staff go out of their way to try and remember what and when you like to eat and drink. If you like a cold glass of dry white wine, then you will probably find that your ranger has remembered and added this to his provisions in the game vehicle!
  • Twice daily game viewing drives, accompanied by a professional field guide and tracker, traverse an area of 10,000 hectares frequented by the Big Five.
  • For the more adventurous, there is also a daily walking safari, which provides an exhilarating opportunity to get as close as possible to the sounds and feelings of the African Bush.
  • As night falls, rangers trained in star gazing will accompany you to the purpose-built observatory.
  • Fully equipped gym.
  • Sensational Aroma Boma Spa.
  • Freshwater outdoor heated pool.
  • A variety of indoor and outdoor dining and relaxation areas to maximise views and watch game activity in the Bush below
  • Individually designed rooms with modern twists which blend perfectly with traditional African themes.
  • Two floodlit tennis courts with viewing pavillion and bar located between Rock and Safari Lodges.
  • Complimentary wifi available in the lounge.
  • Complimentary mini-bar
  • A babysitting service is available at no extra charge. However, it is off-duty staff (who nevertheless have plenty of experience with children) who are used for this. Professional child carers are available, but with advance notice and at an extra cost.
  • There are security guards on duty all night; they pay particular attention to rooms occupied by Cubs.

Rooms

Families staying at Ulusuba can be accommodated in ROCK LODGE and CLIFF LODGE. The 8 rooms and suites at Rock Lodge have recently been refurbished and given a fabulous facelift. Each is unique with a contemporary African design and a hint of tribal flair. Cliff Lodge features two magnificent suites.

One thing to be aware of - Rock and Cliff Lodge are, as you can see from the pictures and as you would imagine from their names, built into a cliff edge. The rooms all have balconies which are fairly open, so, with small children, be careful particularly to keep the doors locked and closed at all times so as to prevent them from wandering onto the balcony unaccompanied; it is probably advisable anyway with the proximity to the baboons and monkeys in the trees surrounding your hideaway!

Rock Cliff Room : 70 sqm
There are four adjoining Rock Cliff rooms , all south facing with views over the vast landscape. Rooms are spacious and offer en-suite bathrooms with spectacular views. Two of these rooms are built on split levels with a spiral staircase connecting the bedroom and bathroom.

Rock Suite : 125 sqm
A spacious two bedroom suite with living area, the master bedroom can be split into a twin and has a full en-suite with views over the bush, and the second queen-bedded room has a smaller en-suite shower room.

Master Suite : 115 sqm
Built on three levels with beautiful views, an en-suite bathroom, and private balcony with infinity plunge pool. The living area has another terrace with sun loungers and features a telescope and iPod docking station.

Makwela Suite : 125 sqm
Two lavish suites built on two levels with full en-suite bathrooms and featuring private balconies with infinity edge plunge pools. With separate living area and study/library, each has a luxurious fold-out sleeper couch suitable for children.

Cliff Lodge, located a short walk from the Main House at Rock Lodge, features two magnificent suites offering guests the ultimate in safari luxury. When you hire both suites for exclusive use, your own chef and private vehicle for game drives is included. Cliff Lodge can accommodate a maximum of 5 adults and 4 children when booked exclusively. The two Cliff Lodge Suites can also be booked individually.

Cliff Lodge 1: 330 sqm
A luxurious two bedroom suite accommodating up to 3 adults and 2 children with one large bed-room and a second smaller bedroom, Cliff Lodge 1 offers a spacious lounge with fireplace, separate kitchen and bar, private swimming pool, spa, gym, satellite TV, Wii and fireplace as well as an out-door barbecue. Access is via a raised walkway from the Main House. Maximum occupancy is 3 adults and 2 children.

Cliff Lodge 2: 120 sqm
A spacious one bedroom suite accommodating up to 2 adults and 2 children on 2 small pull-out beds, Cliff Lodge 2 offers a lounge area with fireplace and a large viewing deck with Jacuzzi. A TV in the lounge with DVD player and a selection of DVDs is provided in both Cliff Lodge Suites. Access is via a raised walkway from the Main House. Maximum occupancy is 2 adults and 2 children.

Food

Meals are an occasion at Ulusaba, and there are many different dining options to choose from. Dinner is a lavish affair and a time to mingle and meet with the other guests and discuss the day’s sightings. Guests are invited to gather in the main lodge for cocktails pre dinner and the chef is on hand to discuss that night’s menu - each night it is different. There is generally a choice of three starters, entrees and desserts with the dishes being Pan -African influenced by many African cultures, flavours and spices.

Dinner can be enjoyed in the main lodge (which is a communal affair) or arrangements can also be made to dine at Boma, a private table outdoors beside a bonfire. You can literally ask for dinner anywhere and it will be served to you (all part of the package).
Imagine a private family dinner by the observatory where you can all stargaze, enjoy an unforgettable experience of eating in “the bush” and create magical family moments; or put your tired children to bed (after a busy day checking out dung droppings!)and listen to them snore whilst you enjoy a romantic dinner on your balcony listening to the calls of the wildlife. Whatever you wish is Ulusaba’s desire to create for you.

Activities

This has been covered already really as this is an activity holiday but to do:

Obviously the game drives for adults and children over 6.

Stargazing at the bush observatory.

Enjoy a treatment in the Spa .

Don't forget the community tour too - a great experience for families.

Top Tips

Ask about going on a community tour during your stay – it’s a great way to get a feel for life in the local area surrounding the reserve.

Book into one of the luxurious Cliff Lodge Suites, or take both suites exclusively and get your own private chef and game drive vehicle!

Rock Lodge and Safari Lodge are about 500m apart, but it’s not possible to walk between them – due to the unpredictable nature of the neighbours! However the staff will be happy to drive you between lodges whenever you like.

The Game Drives go at 5am, so if you have early risers (like we do), this will feel like the norm!

Kids go free - there is no supplement for children staying in their parents room.
