When you first arrive and drive into the car park at Woolley Grange, you actually arrive at the back door first. This is a shame as the true grandeur of the Jacobean Mansion can only really be appreciated from the beautiful gardens to the front of the property. But, in a way that sums up this luxury child friendly hotel. It is not about formal decoration or grandeur; it is about welcoming you and your family to kick-back, relax, unwind and enjoy each other as a family and get some couple time back. Ah bliss!

The hotel is full of unusual spaces, turns and objects. Older children will have great fun exploring the hotel and toddlers love the unusual artefacts. My two year old thought the slightly strange looking lion(?) in the hall of the hotel was wonderful for sitting on and pretending to ride. There are lots of little rooms here; there is a little snug and two small lounges, all of which are the kind of places you could kick your shoes off and curl up with a good book. This is truly a place where you do not need to worry about your little terrors annoying other guests; everyone here is in the same boat. The result is surprisingly not a cacophony of noise but a wonderful gentle murmur of children laughing, giggling and playing (with the occasional squawk of course!).

The hotel literature says ‘Woolley is your home whilst you are with us; relax, unwind and let us take care of you’ and that is exactly what they do. If you are a first time parent, you have found your heaven.

For Kids

  • Trampolines, football nets, cricket wicket, croquet, grass maze, den building, pond for tadpole collecting and lots of bats and balls.
  • Outdoor swimming pool with sun terrace.
  • Hen House – playroom for the older children with Wii, table football, table tennis, TV and DVD player (unsupervised).
  • Woolley Bears Den (OFSTED regulated crèche). Guests can use this for free for up to 2 hours at a time, as many times in the day as you like. The crèche is supervised between 9.30am and 5.30pm every day (except Christmas Day when it opens at 2pm). The room is open at all other times so when it is not supervised parents can use the room with their children.
  • In addition to the crèche facilities the hotel organises such activities as bread making, biscuit decorating, making bird houses, scarecrow dressing, water play and pretend play in the Wendy house.
  • Feed the chickens and help in the Good Life Garden. (The hotel tries to use as much produce as they can from their own garden).
  • Cinema Room where DVDs are shown daily at various times (this is unsupervised).
  • Children’s High Tea at 5.30; you pre-order at 4.30pm to prevent any delays. Such consideration just shows how much they know about children - no waiting for the food to arrive whilst everyone’s stress level rises!
  • Space to play. There is a large lawned garden to the front of the hotel where there is a variety of outdoor play equipment. There is also a nature garden and the kitchen garden (Good Life Garden) with play house and chickens to feed. Next to the Hen House, there is an outdoor play area for the under 5s which has a magical willow tunnel, large sandpit and climbing frame, swings and slide for adventure and mischief.
  • Access to the indoor swimming pool all day and an outdoor pool during the summer.
  • Plastic cutlery and crockery at the restaurant and of course high chairs.
  • Cinema room for all to chill out in, big people and littlies, with one or more films each day being shown depending on the weather conditions.

For Adults

  • Truly unwind, read a book and catch up on your sleep while your children are very well looked after.
  • Beautiful spa which is tranquil and has a number of treatment rooms.
  • 2 AA rosette restaurant. This is not strictly for adults but the hotel does ask if children do attend dinner that they behave accordingly.
  • Baby sitting is available on request.
  • If you have a baby, just let them know so they can put your changing mat, nappy bucket and anything else you request in your room. See in top tips for everything the hotel can provide.
  • Dispense Bar – the hotel can serve you drinks in any of the restaurants or lounges.
  • In the summer, dining spills out onto the hotel’s sunny terrace for alfresco meals from leisurely lunches to indulgent afternoon teas whilst your children can play with the other children at the hotel on the safe lawn just below.

Rooms

There are twenty-five rooms, all individual in style and layout, which mirror the quirky layout of the hotel.

The small double rooms do fit a cot but if you want a bit more space we would recommend the next room category.

standard double or small suite rooms can fit up to two extra beds or cots. If you want a bit more privacy, ask for a small suite in the courtyard; this suite has a separate lounge area which can have two extra beds (cot or z-beds).

The standard suites or large doubles are bigger still. The large doubles have a small sitting area within the bedroom whilst the standard suites again have a separate lounge area. There is a split level suite in the main house which would be great for older kids as the bedroom is on the upper floor with a sofa bed in the living room downstairs (there are baby gates on the stairs if you book this with younger children).

The interconnecting rooms allow you to book a double bedroom with a separate children’s bedroom; the large suites have a double bedroom with a separate twin room.

Again there is a split level large suite, this time with the bedroom on the lower level and sitting room with a sofa bed on the upper floor. This is located in the Pavilion, which is about a minute’s walk from the main house.

The Hayloft is the biggest room in the hotel and can
accommodate up to two adults and five children.

Most of the hotel rooms have recently been renovated with the remainder to be completed shortly. This is a hotel in an old mansion, so every room is different and some are larger than others and are decorated in a traditional style. They all have that warm, homely feeling like the common areas of the hotel.

Room features

Food

Children’s high tea is served in the Orangery at 5.30pm every day.

Older children can choose from their own menu for tea from 6pm in the Orangery. This is the perfect time for the whole family to sit down together – parents can relax with a drink whilst children enjoy a hearty tea.

An Early Evening Menu in the Orangery is also offered for parents or older children so that families can dine together.

For the grown-ups, the restaurant at Woolley Grange offers 2AA rosette fine dining in the evening – the relaxed ambience is complemented by an excellent wine list, fabulous menus and discreetly attentive service.

Activities

Longleat House and Safari Park is approximately 30 minutes away - a great place for kids to see some more exotic animals in their normal habitat.

Bath is only a few miles 8 miles away - perhaps more of an adult afternoon but there are some great parks. The Royal Victoria Park has a fantastic playground for kids.

The hotel can arrange for riding lessons at Wellow Trekking Centre which is close by.

Top Tips

The hotel can provide equipment to help look after little ones so you don’t need to bring everything with you; nappy buckets, changing mats, sterilisers (or they will sterilise bottles for you – after all, you are on holiday...), bottle warmers, mini fridge, kettles, travel cots (you can request a wooden cot if you prefer), Z-beds, bed guards, synthetic bedding for allergies, potty, baby bath, night lights, baby listening, babysitting, bibs, highchairs, Robert Welch children’s cutlery, special dietary requirements for those who don’t like vegetables, Bugaboo pushchair, Hippy Chick child carrier to name but a few!

No need to pack the car with toys - the crèche is full of them and you can borrow any toys during your stay.

The hotel welcomes your dogs too but not all rooms are suitable so this is subject to availability and must be booked in advance. There is a £15 supplement per night for your pet.

The crèche has some of the best toys in a crèche I have ever seen – our children could have stayed in here for hours and happily played. When we visited, it was raining continuously but they were never bored. The girls working there were also wonderful. They offered to change our baby’s nappy even whilst we were staying in there with our children to play. There is a very comfortable sofa with a TV in there which adults can lounge on whilst their kids explore the delights of the crèche.

Relax and catch up on your sleep whilst your children are well looked after. This is a place where everyone can recharge their batteries!

The staff are amazing and very friendly. My sister-in- law who came to visit whilst we were there had forgotten her buggy in the chaos of getting her two small children in the car alone. The hotel staff were very quick to welcome her; they gladly lent her a buggy so that her baby could sleep in it while we enjoyed a very relaxed lunch and they helped her to get her two year old into a bib whilst she was sorting out her baby.

Children up to the age of 16 stay for free in their parent’s room - subject to the suitability of the room to take extra beds. Children’s breakfast is charged in addition.
