Europe is the best bet for your family ski holidays due to short travel times and great skiing. However, Finding the right resort for your family can be tough as ski area, ski schools, childcare options and accommodation and travel time all need to be taken into consideration. There are many resorts to choose from, we have shortlisted our top three.
Val Thorens, France
Due to being at high altitude Val Thorens is an exceptional destination for spring skiing, an excellent time to visit would be during the Easter break as they’ll surely still be snow on the slopes. With a local ski school offering programmes tailored for all ages available for the little ones is a Snow Garden lesson for ages 3-4 and for older kids and teenager’s regular lessons and competition training. Away from the slopes Val Thorens also has a ‘Magic Land’ that offers a ball pit, bouncy castles and trampolines.
The deluxe 5-star Hotel Altapura offers luxury within a child friendly environment. Children here will be treated as much as VIPs as the parents as there is dedicated kids Concierge available. There is a selection of interconnecting rooms, you can choose the best set up for the family with plenty of space. There are three restaurants which you can enjoy with the kids whilst they that can make use of the play area.
Villars offers great hospitality with a variety of ski terrain suitable for different ski abilities. Young beginners can learn to ski and have fun in the ‘snow kindergarten’ that also has a 2km sledging run. L’Etable offers a place for families to enjoy a mountain lunch next to an alpine farm that keeps donkeys, sheep and pigs.
Stay at the luxurious hotel Chalet Royalp which occupies a peaceful location above Villars centre. Avoriaz is car free, meaning that it is all ski-in/ski-out. Luckily there is easy access to the lifts in the morning and easy access back to your accommodation in the evening. Being a town built for convenience everything is close by such as the ski school, rental shops, restaurants and an indoor water world perfect for the children. The ski selection is perfect for families as there is plenty of beginner slopes to get in that much needed practice.
A great place to stay would be the l’Amara. The accommodation available consists of luxurious 4-star self-catering apartments especially designed for families and children of all ages. For families with children under the ages of two there are facilities available such as a cot, highchair and pushchair. L’Amara offers services for toddlers and children as there is a crèche with English speaking nannies.
