Bovey Castle is in one of the most stunning settings we have seen. Set in beautiful Dartmoor, this is a place where you can relax, unwind, go mad and go glam all under one gorgeous roof. The hotel is not actually a castle but you would never know. It is truly beautiful with huge fireplaces, double height stone rooms and sweeping staircases. Choose from a host of activities to entertain you and your family throughout your stay: a stunning spa for those looking for something less energetic, amazing scenery and beautiful grounds, and fantastic service - this is definitely a luxury hotel for all of the family. Whether it’s a romantic night away where you can employ a babysitter, a fun-filled family weekend with the children or a sumptuous large family get-together, there is something for everyone.

There are 64 individually designed bedrooms by Annabel Elliot, located in the original manor house and private mews at Bovey Castle.

Children up to the age of 4 years are accommodated free of charge in a cot or on an extra bed.

From the age of 5 to 14 a child can also stay in their parents’ bedroom but there is a charge for this of £20 per night. If you want to share a room with your child, you can only book a Superior Castle room category or higher.

If you have two children (like me,) then your best choice is interconnecting rooms or a family room which is identified as a Junior State. This is advertised on the website as an open plan suite so you would assume no separate area for the children to sleep but some of the Junior State rooms are two separate rooms. We stayed in Room 45, which had a large separate bedroom and separate lounge. This was a huge room for our family of four. In the bedroom there was a king size bed with a large desk, wardrobe, dresser and two arm chairs – there was still ample space for a cot. The living room had a double sofa bed which again, even down at night-time left plenty of space for a cot.

Room 25 is the same category and layout as Room 45.

Room 38 is ultra-cute; it is also a Junior State room but is in the eaves. There is a king size bedroom, gorgeous bathroom with roll top bath and then a cute little nursery room with a single bed and lovely little kid’s chair and table set. My two little girls immediately sat down to play. This nursery room would easily fit a cot too, so another good option for either a couple with a baby or one child or for a family of four.

There is always a maximum of four in a room, so if you are a family of five you are not so well accommodated in the main hotel - however there is always the option of a lodge (see below).

The State Rooms are bigger still but they are open plan; consequently this means sharing a room but they are enormous so there is plenty of room for two children.

If you are coming for a family gathering or party, then the 14 luxurious lodges just minutes from the hotel would be perfect - self-catering but with the option, of course, of eating in the hotel or having the hotel bring your food to you! BBQ packs are available, afternoon tea is another option or simply order a takeaway from the Castle Bistro. Staying in a Lodge is a perfect option for a larger family or family gathering.

Room features

The Edwardian Grill is the Bovey Castle's fine dining restaurant. Starters range from £12 – 15, mains from £22 – 60 and puddings from £12 – 18. The kids’ meals were from £6 – 7.50. There were options of spaghetti bolognaise, chicken and mash or sausage and mash.

The Castle Bistro is a much more informal place to eat and is open till 10pm, so guests can also choose to eat here. This is a more burgers and chips affair (but posh burgers and chips) and still using the freshest of local ingredients. There are also some fantastic chocolates to purchase as gifts or to eat in the Bistro! During school holidays, children’s high tea is served here at 5.30pm and a DVD is put on. You can, if you wish, leave your children whilst the Bistro staff supervise them.

The Summerhouse
Partners take note! If this is a special occasion, why not book the Summerhouse for a romantic meal ‘a deux’. You need to book a babysitter to enjoy the truly intimate nature of eating out al fresco under the stars whilst being discreetly served by the waiting staff.

There are so many activities on site at Bovey Castle and offsite nearby which are mentioned in the Kids and Adults tab. Please have a look there for the extensive list of things to do.

This is an outdoor and indoor adventure wonderland for adults and little ones.

Top Tips

  • Bovey Castle is truly in the middle of the countryside. Our sat nav took us on numerous routes down roads which at times didn’t feel big enough for one car! When we met another coming the other way, we felt the need to breathe in! The main entrance to the hotel is on the B3212, which is where our sat nav took us on the day we arrived; it is a much better road than the rather strange route our sat nav took us on our second day. That was a farm track more than a road! I would add ‘via the B3212’ when you input the post code to your sat nav - or take a map with you. The hotel advises you to put Bovey Castle Golf Course but our sat nav wouldn’t allow us to do that.
  • There is no mobile phone service in the hotel, so be warned.
  • Ask for room 45, 25 or 38 if you want a Junior State category with separate areas to sleep with your children.
  • You can arrange swimming lessons ahead if you wish.
  • Don’t forget, it is valet parking, so just turn up unload the kids and enjoy!
  • Although the hotel is pretty expensive, and there were people there for a romantic weekend away, the hotel was also full of families, even though we went outside of school holidays. There is plenty of room for the kids to run around both indoors and outdoors and there are four large reception rooms for people to relax in, so you do not feel as if you are disturbing guests who may be there without children. This is really a luxury hotel where the whole family are welcome.
  • Yummy cookies in the tea tray.
  • The resort team were keen to point out that, with enough notice, they would be able to organise pretty much anything. They look after the Bovey Ranger activities and adults‘ activities at the estate and are incredibly accommodating.
  • All of the hotel staff were very friendly and made it clear we could ask for anything for the kids, and for ourselves, that we needed.

Lodge Breaks

Treat yourselves to a three, five, seven night or more break in one of the fabulous luxury lodges.
Tucked away in the hotel estate and a very short distance from the main hotel, these private granite built three-bedroomed lodges make ideal accommodation for families, superb for friends staying together or those just seeking a bit of peace and quiet…
All the hotel facilities and housekeeping services are still available for your use, giving you all the benefits of Bovey Castle and all the independence too.
